Monday Theology

Monday Theology Summer Term Term 2008

Summer Term starts April 21 - June 23 (half term May 26).

Summer term course now closed. Autumn term brochure and application forms will be out in July '08.

Understanding the Bible and understanding people are two vital tasks for Christians today. In a world where many different ideas jostle for our attention, it is crucial for us to learn to listen to God in the Scriptures, and to grasp a Christian approach to what it means to be human. Our two courses this term will aim to cover these fascinating and important questions.

Level 1 Course - Introducing the Bible

The Bible is the touchstone to which Christians return again and again in seeking how to live and how to think. The church has from its earliest days looked to this book to tell us what God is like, what this world is, and how we are to live within it. It has shaped our culture more than any other book, provides comfort and strength for millions everyday, yet to many it still remains a mystery. This term's course aims to provide an introduction to the study of the Bible. It will look at how Biblical Study has developed in recent years, as well as giving an introductory guide to the various kinds of literature in it and some of its key books and themes.

Level 2 Course - Understanding People

People are complex. Getting involved in Christian Ministry involves trying to understand the way people work and think and what motivates them and shapes them. This course aims to help us explore the relationship between the Bible, Christian Theology and psychology. Its aim is to enable us to understand more of what it means to be human and to help each other grow into faith and maturity.

WHEN? The courses begin April 21 - June 23, 2008 and run over 8 Monday's with a break for half term May 26. We start with an optional breakfast at 9.00, worship at 9.30, teaching at 10.00 and we normally finish at 1.00 pm.

WHERE? Teaching will now take place in Church House & the Spring at Holy Trinity Brompton, on the Brompton Road, London (click here for map).

WHO CAN APPLY? Anyone who wants to understand their faith better, and has a willingness to learn. The course is set at the level of first year of a certificate or degree course, so presumes no previous knowledge of study of theology. However, some level 2 courses will assume some prior theological teaching, but this will be noted on the course description.

WHO TEACHES IT? The course will be mainly taught by the staff of St Paul's Theological Centre, the Revd Dr Graham Tomlin, the Revd Dr Mike Lloyd, and Jane Williams with occasional guest speakers.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The basic morning course costs £150, student rate £100. For further options including afternoon seminars and the option of doing associated coursework, click here

HOW DO I APPLY? The best way is to apply online or download the application form (though see the section ‘what if I want to do more?’ below, for more details on different ways of taking this course)

WHAT IF I WANT TO DO MORE? Courses taught in SPTC as part of Monday Theology are part of a longer-term programme which we are hoping in future will lead towards a certificate, diploma or degree in theology. At present we are actively exploring this option, which we expect to be available soon. However, this year, we are offering the option of students completing coursework (one essay or assignment per term) which will enable them to get more out of the course, and will hopefully count retrospectively towards a qualification in theology in the future.

The basic course takes place on Monday mornings (please note - Thursday Theology courses have now all been moved to Monday). At the same time, alongside the morning lectures and groupwork, we are offering further discussion classes in the afternoons, which relate theology to issues in Christian ministry. Afternoon teaching will look at aspects of Christian leadership. We will read biblical texts and theological works from the past together and discuss them in the light of our experience of leading a pastorate, leading on Alpha, or other ministries. There will also be teaching on how to give effective, inspiring and biblical talks.

Students can opt to take either morning teaching only, or the full day. They can also choose to do either of these options with or without coursework.

In other words, there are four ways of taking Monday Theology:

TEACHING ONLY

A: Morning teaching only (£150 per term)

B: Full day teaching only (£250 per term)

TEACHING WITH COURSE WORK:

C: Morning teaching with coursework (£300 per term)*

D: Full day teaching with coursework (£400 per term)*

* Please note these prices may rise if and when the course is recognised for credit towards a recognised qualification, to cover university fees and further administrative costs.
