Summer reading - the Christians fight back
Just back from the summer holidays. Been reading some good things, including one of the best responses to Dawkins et al that I’ve seen so far. It’s called ‘What’s So Great about Christianity’ by Dinesh d’Souza. The title isn’t great and at times the theology is a bit wayward, but as a polemical response it’s much more direct & confident than most anti-Dawkins books. While most stuff on the new atheism has been fairly defensive, just replying to their critique of religion, this one is much more robust, taking the game to the opposition and exposing the intellectual, social and emotional bankruptcy of atheism. He makes a useful distinction between evolution (which he thinks strongly ties in with Christian views of creation and nature) and Darwinism as an overblown and over-confident reliance on the scientific method to answer every question, not just those to do with the natural world. Long-ish at 350+ pages, but well worth a read.

Never has been it more urgent for Christians to give a reason for the faith that is within them. In the midst of the conflict between literalism in religion and the disintegrating world view, the appeal of mature biblical faith is very clearThe Rt Revd Richard Chartres
